Learning to Learn
Coastline has launched Learning to Learn, the 5-part podcast series about how we as humans and students learn and grow - in and out of the classroom. The show is produced by Saul Rubin, and co-written and co-hosted alongside Associate Professor Danny Pittaway, Coastline’s Student Success Coordinator. Read more about Learning to Learn.
Episode #1: "Failure - Going Easy on Yourself"
I fail. You fail. We all fail. It's a natural part of life and especially of school, where, with so many assignments, the odds are high that at some point you will find yourself disappointed. Instead of fighting against failure, it's important to integrate it into your process, to know that you are only human after all.
Episode #2: "Balance"
I'm busy and I bet you are too. It seems like we're all trying to balance our schoolwork, our work-work, and our social life (not to mention sleep, health, etc., etc.). Students especially are often asked to juggle so many things at once; it all starts to feel like a precarious see-saw. We spoke to a first-generation college graduate about imposter syndrome, how she managed to juggle it all and be the first in her family to do so! But I'm busy so I'm going to wrap this up. And I know you're busy too.
Episode #3: "Adaptability"
In episode one, Saul talked about failure and self-compassion; now, in episode three he tries to unpack what to do after. Baseball, Basketball, Science, practically everything...it's all built around repetition, resilience, and flexibility, a willingness to make small or large changes (or remain totally steadfast) to improve or learn. In other words: adaptability.
Episode #4: "Be Helpful, Be Kind, Be Supportive"
In Episode Four, Saul unpacks the 'wheel of support' analogy, explores (of all things) bicycles, and discusses the value of supporting others as a way to support ourselves. So roll your bike out onto the street and go for a ride. Maybe with a friend. Oh and strap on your helmet too. Safety first.
Episode #5: "Be Specific"
In the final episode of L2L, Saul digs into the specifics - when is it worthwhile to ask specific questions, give specific answers, and have specific goals in and outside of the classroom. He also reviews the season and introduces a thematic metaphor for the show as a whole.
