Student Learning Outcomes for Coastline Students
Student Learning Outcomes
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) state what a student is able to do at the completion of a course or program. A student learning outcome is a statement of expectation that articulates how a student can apply the knowledge, skills, or abilities gained from the course. Instructors assess outcomes in class to reflect on student learning and to consider adjustments to instruction (e.g., lessons, pacing, assignments). All course outlines of record must have student learning outcomes, and these outcomes must be included in all course syllabi. Further, the results of SLO assessment are reported by the instructor of record to the SLO Cloud (in Canvas) at the end of each primary term (fall and spring).
There are different levels of outcomes: institutional, program, and course. Faculty are responsible to assess course-level SLOs every time a course is taught. Program-level SLOs are written by faculty and help define what is learned when a student completes a degree or certificate. Program-level SLOs are measured by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. Institutional-level SLOs are broad statements of transformed ability that are the intention of the college to impart to all students who complete a program of study.
Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs)
In 2022-2023, the college developed the following institutional-level student learning outcomes:
- Information Literacy and Critical Thinking: Find, evaluate, synthesize, and communicate information in various formats. Apply creative thought to form an argument, solve a problem, or reach a conclusion through the application of strong inductive and valid deductive reasoning or use of technical skills.
- Effective Communication: Write clearly and concisely to convey both substance and intent with accuracy. Demonstrate active listening and utilize non-verbal cues to enhance formal and informal synchronous communication. Organize and deliver effective presentations to inform or persuade using current technologies.
- Personal Responsibility and Self-Awareness: Analyze one's actions and consequences through self-evaluation to effectively manage competing priorities by planning, organizing, and managing time. Develop personal action plans for the purpose of continual learning and growth.
- Social Responsibility: Build an understanding of both individual and societal roles in an interconnected world to include the shaping of diverse perspectives for the purpose of inclusion. Shape perceptions of cultural, historical, and geographical issues providing a voice for all cultures. Encourage the establishment and maintenance of community relationships and networks toward shared values and appreciation of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism.
Program Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs)
PSLOs are clear, encompassing statements describing what students should know, understand, and be able to do upon completing of a certificate or degree program. They are part of the curriculum documentation for all degree and certificate programs at the college, and they are measured by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. PSLO data is used by program faculty to help create direction for the ongoing analysis of teaching and learning as documented in the annual program review reporting process.
Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs)
CSLOs are clear, concise statements describing what students should know, understand, and be able to do upon completing a specific course. CSLOs serve as a bridge between what is being taught and what a student absorbs and can demonstrate, helping faculty understand and measure the learning process from the student's perspective. It is recommended that CSLOs be assessed via assignments/activities that are reliable, practical, and authentic.
