Artist Biography
Ashley Bowman's work investigates surveillance and the restraints it places on the individual. In the age of computers and political paranoia, interactions and daily life are monitored, recorded, and critiqued, ultimately placing human sincerity in question. Individuals either adopt a persona, a mixture of authenticity and farce in order to match the social order of their peers, or risk social isolation with unfettered personal expression. Bowman's elaborately designed, and mathematically planned hand-knit masks reject this social pressure and instead celebrate the unique beauty of the individual. Adorned with coral, urchin shells, pearlescent beads, crystals, and needles these amorphous, brightly toned masks highlight one's frailty, vulnerability, and human desire rather than camouflage it. Representing specific individuals her masks study the human response to trauma and surveillance and allow the viewer a rare, intimate glimpse into the private world of another.
Ashley Bowman lives and works in Orange, California.
