CRPP Innovative Best Practices
Culturally Responsive Teaching
Coastline has been awarded the Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Practices (CRPP) Innovative Best Practices Grant - a competitive, one-time grant to aid in the development of innovative Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)-minded and culturally competent training for faculty. Trainings will focus specifically on nurturing the development of culturally responsive pedagogy and classroom practices for disproportionately impacted and underrepresented communities.
CRPP Grant Goals
The primary goal of this grant is to improve retention/persistence and completion rates of diverse student populations at Coastline College by developing DEIA-focused professional development opportunities to upskill faculty and successfully expand their capacities to serve students, improving students' experiences and outcomes.
To help achieve this goal, the following two DEIA interventions were proposed and accepted:
- Intervention #1: Scale and expand the Current Pilot Program of the Faculty Equity Course (FEC)
- Intervention #2: Scale and expand the Faculty Center Professional Development Series (FCPDS)
-
Faculty Equity Course
5-week research-based Peralta Online Equity training course, approximately 5 hours of work per week
- Adapted by the SEA Workgroup to complement current efforts of Coastline faculty to make Canvas courses equitable for all students; including a focus on supporting African- American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and LGBTQ+ students
- Collaborative environment to enhance existing online Canvas courses
- Will focus on student access to technology and student services, common forms of bias, and inclusion and engagement in class
- Now is the time to update our practices to ensure we are providing a classroom that is accessible, inclusive, diverse, equitable and culturally responsive.

Faculty Center Professional Development Series
Through the grant, we have expanded resources for faculty to engage in more dynamic and culturally responsive classroom practices, this includes the following:
Faculty Deeper Roots Series
Deeper Roots Series is focused sharing knowledge, ideas, and best and promising practices on diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, anti-racism, and accessibility (DEISAA). The series delves into instruction-related topics, like creating curriculum and supporting our students, focusing on development of culturally responsive pedagogy and classroom practices for disproportionately impacted and underrepresented communities. Our speakers include Coastline faculty members and administrators, other California Community College leaders, and leaders across the nation in diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, anti-racism, and accessibility.

Coastline believes professional development can advance the racial equity and racial justice agenda envisioned for California’s community colleges. The focal point of the proposed project leverages professional development activities that can be a lever for eradicating the practices that create the "separate and unequal" academic caste system that continues to be upheld by structural racism.
