Coast Colleges - Name Standards and Pronouns
What are gender pronouns?
Gender pronouns are the set of pronouns (listed below) that an individual wants others to use in order to reflect that person's gender identity. They are also a set of pronouns used to refer to people that you are talking about.
Why do they matter?
- They allow us to appreciate and celebrate differences in others and create an environment of equity and inclusion.
- They set a tone of allyship. It can truly make all of the difference, especially for new community members that may feel particularly vulnerable in a new environment.
- They can make others feel included when used correctly. Using the wrong gender pronoun can make them feel disrespected, invalidated, dismissed, alienated, or hurt.

Pronouns and Virtual Learning
- Gender pronouns can be new to many students, staff, and faculty, which is why it is so important to take the time to explain and use gender pronouns over Zoom.
- Use the list of gender pronouns above to display examples of what gender pronouns are and how they can be used.
- Set the tone. Have everyone introduce themselves with their pronouns during class time and/or during a meeting. If no introductions are made, and you are unsure of someone's pronouns, start by providing your own pronouns.
- Be an ally. Always use the gender pronouns or name that someone has provided. If you make a mistake, make a quick apology and try not to make the mistake again.
- Create a culture of respect and inclusion. Put your pronouns on your email signature and Zoom profile: How to Add Pronouns to your Zoom.
