Black History Month Parade & Cultural Faire

- Location: Downtown Anaheim
Coastline, Orange Coast, Goldenwest College and the Umoja Community will be participating in the Annual OC Black History Month Parade & Culture Faire in Downtown Anaheim.
As the only black heritage parade in the county, the event showcases Anaheim's and Orange County's culturally rich African American community. Did you know this yearly event brings some 8,000 people together to mark the contributions of African Americans to Anaheim and the county? Come be part of this greatness!

Unity in Activism with Ken Nwadike Jr. - Orange Coast College

Join us for a powerful and courageous conversation feature Ken E. Nwadike Jr. Ken is a peace activist, motivational speaker and video journalist. Well-known as the Free Hugs Guy online, Ken uses video and live performance to spread love, inspire change and raise awareness of social issues. His postings have reached hundreds of millions of people on Facebook and YouTube. He founded the Hollywood Half-Marathon to help the homeless after overcoming homelessness himself as a student athlete. He risked his life on the frontlines of protests across the nation, de-escalating violence in the midst of intense anger. His engagements foster belonging by developing positive connections and human interaction. Light refreshments served.

Unity in Our Voices Luncheon featuring OCC Students and Dr. Ron McCurdy– Orange Coast College

Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of original student poetry and spoken word, featuring the live music of Dr. Ron McCurdy and the Langston Hughes Project. This dynamic performance brings Langston Hughes’ poetic masterpieces along with our students original poetry to life with a live musical band, blending Hughes’ and the students’ words with captivating music and visuals. Together, the poetry, music, and visuals create a powerful and immersive experience that bridges the Harlem Renaissance, the post-World War II Beat era’s coffeehouse jazz poetry, the transformative Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and current social justice issues of today in an inspiring creative and artistic expression. Also to include an impeccable lunch featuring the best of African American cuisine and desserts.

Unity in Cultural Identity with Dr. Chike Akua - Orange Coast College

Join us for a dynamic and interactive discussion with Dr. Chike Akua. Dr. Akua is a former Teacher of the Year who has been recognized in two states (VA and GA) for teaching excellence. He was also selected as one of Ebony magazine’s “50 Leaders of Tomorrow” a distinction he is living up to today. Deeply committed to culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy and instructional materials, Dr. Akua has written and published several books and parent/teacher guides designed for today’s students. The book, Honoring Our Ancestral Obligations: 7 Steps to Black Student Success is also used at a number of higher schools, colleges and universities for students and those who serve them. Dr. Akua is frequently called upon by education, civic, and social organizations to speak about educational excellence and cultural knowledge. He is an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Clark Atlanta University. As a recognized master teacher and leadership strategist, Dr. Akua is one of the most sought-after speakers at regional and national conferences, urban school districts, colleges and universities.

As part of Black History Month 2025, Tee will share her journey of overcoming challenges, breaking barriers, and thriving in industries where she is often "the only.”
Through a captivating presentation and a moderated discussion, Tee will explore the intersections of her identity, her creative process, and the importance of representation and resilience. This event celebrates the power of authenticity and courage in creating change, making it a must-attend for anyone passionate about diversity, equity, inclusion, and storytelling.
