Dolphin Assistance Program (DAP)
Basic Needs, under the direction of Student Equity, offers the Dolphin Assistance Program (DAP). This program supports students with two textbook offerings through a book borrowing collection and/or book voucher. Review offerings below to check eligibility!

Book Borrowing: Summer 2024
Book borrowing is available through the Dolphin Assistance Program (DAP).
The Dolphin Assistance Program contains a collection of books from within the Coastline community for students to borrow at no cost for the duration of the class/classes that require the borrowed book.
Books offered are based on availability.
Students who borrow a book are participants in the Dolphin Assistance Program and agree to attend a workshop, return the book(s), and complete a survey at the conclusion of the semester.

To be issued a textbook from the Dolphin Assistance Program borrowing collection students must meet all the eligibility criteria listed below:
- Must be a Coastline student registered for Summer 2024.
- Must be enrolled in 1 class at Coastline College.
- Must be impacted in a way that prohibits your student success.
- Must have completed the Dolphin Assistance Program application.

- How many textbooks can I borrow?
- There is no limit on borrowed textbooks. Borrowing is dependent on availability.
- How can I receive the textbooks I want to borrow if I can't come to campus?
- Please indicate this in the Dolphin Assistance Program Application to coordinate arrangements.
- Can I borrow textbooks and request a book voucher?
- Students can utilize voucher and borrow if each eligibility criteria are met.
- Can I keep the textbooks I borrow?
- No, textbooks must be returned at the end of the semester.
Book Vouchers: Spring 2024
Spring 2024 application opens at 9am (PST) Monday, December 15, 2023.
The Dolphin Assistance Program book voucher is awarded to eligible students in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms based on program funding availability, student program eligibility and financial aid eligibility. Students participating in the Book Voucher program agree to return their books to the Basic Needs Office at the conclusion of the semester. The books will be donated to the Coastline book borrowing program. Students must participate in one workshop and complete a follow up survey.
- In Fall and Spring semesters, the maximum amount disbursed is $300 in Book Vouchers: 7+ units = $300, 1-6.5 units = $150.
- Vouchers will be approved on a rolling basis until April 12, 2024.
- Students must be enrolled in Spring 2024 classes to qualify.
- Purchases may be for your course books/materials only.
- There will be no cash back for unused amounts.
- No cash refunds will be given for items purchased with this voucher.
- Return of any books purchased with this voucher is subject to the return policy of the bookstore.
- If funding is left over from your Fall 23 book voucher, you can use it for your intersession class(es).
- No additional funding will be awarded for intersession classes.
Submitting the program application does not guarantee a book voucher service. It is contingent upon student eligibility and available funds. All exchanges and returns are done at the bookstore in compliance with the bookstore's return/exchange policy.
All books and required course material (lab kits) purchased are subject to audit. Violation of any of the above terms will result in the requirement to reimburse the college for the total amount of books purchased with the voucher. The individual will also be excluded from future voucher eligibility.

Students participating in the Book Voucher program agree to return their books to the Basic Needs Office at the conclusion of the semester. - In Summer, the maximum amount disbursed is $150 in Book Vouchers
- Vouchers will be approved on a rolling basis until June 24, 2024.
- Students must be enrolled in Summer 2024 classes to qualify.
- Purchases may be for your course books/materials only.
- There will be no cash back for unused amounts.
- No cash refunds will be given for items purchased with this voucher.
- Return of any books purchased with this voucher is subject to the return policy of the bookstore.

To be considered for the Dolphin Assistance Program book voucher, students must meet all the eligibility criteria listed below:
- Must be a Coastline student registered for Spring 2024.
- Must be enrolled in 3 units at Coastline College.
- Must be impacted in a way that prohibits your student success.
- Must have completed the Dolphin Assistance Program (DAP) application.
- Must have sufficient unmet need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.
Students already receiving supplement book voucher assistance from other programs such as EOPS, CARE, NextUp, Guardian Scholars, CalWORKs, College Promise, or Veteran, do not qualify.
For Fall and Spring semesters, eligibility criteria will be checked immediately after the last withdrawal deadline in the preceding semester. All eligibility criteria must be met at that time.

- How often can I get a book voucher?
- Students may only receive 1 book voucher per semester.
- I am also a student at OCC and GWC, can I use my book voucher there?
- No, Book Vouchers can only be used at Coastline. You will only be allocated for the number of units you are taking at Coastline.
- Can I use my book voucher on Amazon or another site?
- No, book vouchers are only redeemable through the Coastline bookstore.
- My professor listed the wrong textbook. How can I return it and get the correct one?
- Email basicneeds@coastline.edu with your name, student ID, and the issue so we can connect you with the correct office.
- I didn't use the entire book voucher amount. Can I receive cash for the rest?
- There is no cash back for unused amounts.
- Can I use my book voucher for multiple semesters?
- Your book voucher can only be used during the semester it is allocated. You can apply for another book voucher the following semester.
- If I withdraw from my course, do I still need to complete the program requirements?
- Yes, students that withdraw are required to return physical items and the end of semester survey.
- Can I be reimbursed for course materials that I buy with the book voucher?
- No refunds will be given for items purchased with the book voucher.

After applying for a book voucher, students will receive an email from the Student Equity Office within 3 business days confirming receipt and next steps.

What To Return
All physical items (textbooks, CDs, etc.) bought with a book voucher must be returned by the end of the semester. For Spring 24, please return items by June 3, 2024.
Students have two options on how they can return physical items:

Online PDF versions of textbooks, lab kits, and one-time access codes do not need to be returned.

At the end of every semester, students who receive a book voucher are asked to complete a survey regarding their experience with our program. We value student feedback as we continuously strive to improve our program to best support students.
Those who participate will receive an Amazon gift card. Students may only submit one survey response per semester.
How to Find Classes with Free Textbooks
Looking for classes with free textbooks? Follow these steps:
- Go to coastline.edu and select "Class Schedule & Catalog" under Academics
- Once you've opened the seachable class schedule, select the desired term
- Select the subject(s) you want to take
- Under Attributes, select "Zero Cost Materials"
- After you hit search, all classes with free materials and textbooks will appear
